And it's really no more customizable than Chrome. The investment group that bought the browser have engaged in some shady predatory lending apps (sometimes reusing the Opera branding). The UI is spiffy, it's as fast as Chrome, the sidebar is neat, and the mobile app is terrific. In response, I switched to the new chromium-based Opera. All of the user chrome got chunkier, padding was at the max, and the whole browser felt like it was getting in my way. The final nail in the coffin was last year, when Mozilla released FireFox 89 and the Proton redesign. I mean, the benchmarks would have you believe that it's comparable to Chrome, but just in using it you can feel that the web isn't optimized for FireFox anymore. The problem with FireFox, though, is that it's kinda clunky and kinda slow. So in 2017, with the release of FireFox 53 and the Quantum redesign, I switched back to Mozilla. At some point, the competition caught up perf wise, and I futzed about with other browsers, but I was too entrenched in the Google ecosystem, and none of the competition offered enough incentive to make me switch permanently.Įventually though, Chrome became the de facto default browser worldwide, and I realized that, as much as I like Google, I didn't really want to support a browser monopoly. So, like everyone else, I hopped on the Chrome train. ![]() I also played with classic Opera a few times back in the day, but when Chrome came out, it was a game changer. Following his lead, when I got my own computer, I started out as a FireFox user (v3-ish). As a kid, I remember my father being a staunch supporter of Netscape, even as IE was becoming the default. I've always been familiar with the "alternative" browser scene. Yesterday I switched to Vivaldi as my main desktop browser, and I wanted to share my first impressions with the community. I wrote a review of the desktop (macOS) app, dividing my thoughts into the good, the bad, and the ugly. It looks like Vivaldi will be my new default browser.
